 Utility Perspective
For this Quarter’s Damage Prevention MVP,
I am featuring Jackson Boring and Trenching. Their office is located
just outside of Jackson
in Oakfield, Tennessee.
I received a nomination from Jason Brooks of JEA (Jackson Energy Authority) to feature Jackson Boring and Trenching. Jason is
a Locator Foreman and
has been with JEA for 13 years. Jason has been in the locating/utility industry since 1996 and really spoke highly of Jackson Boring and Trenching.
With the company growing, Roy needed Nancy’s help on a full-time basis. Nancy was a Nurse by trade and spent 20 years in the medical field. Nancy left the nursing
field and took over the company as a Woman Owned Business in the early 2000s. Nancy owns and runs the business,
is a licensed contractor, and is certified by Go- DBE (Governor’s Office
of Diversity Business Enterprise). Roy and Nancy also have help from their son Casey Johnson, who is a Job Foreman. Now, the company has twelve employees, and they do interstate and bridge widening projects for the Tennessee Department
of Transportation
(TDOT), fiber work
for telecommunication companies, and all aspects of underground utilities for municipalities and general contractors. In Jackson,
on Interstate 40, Jackson Boring and Trenching did an 84” casing bore.
One of the biggest things
that Jason pointed out
was how careful Jackson
Boring and Trenching is
when they are performing
work. “They treat utilities
like they are their own
assets. You can tell they
don’t want to damage any
facilities. From taking the
tolerance zone seriously
by hand digging to expose
the utilities before they
cross it, to pre-marking job
sites with white markings.
They are a wonderful company to work with!” Jason also mentioned that their communication is top notch, and they are great with follow up on any communication. Jackson Boring and Trenching is a perfect candidate to feature, because of their track record of safety and their damage prevention practices.
History of Jackson Boring and Trenching
I sat down with Nancy Johnson, who

is the Owner of Jackson Boring and Trenching. Nancy told me that the company was started by her husband Roy Johnson in 1993. Roy started out as a locator in the early 1990s. Working as a locator, Roy started dabbling in the underground construction industry and bought some equipment and decided
to branch out. The company grew and got as big as six crews and twenty-five employees covering many states from Texas to Virginia. Some of the early customers included Bellsouth (now AT&T) and MasTec.
Job Responsibilities and Calling In Locate Tickets
Speaking with Nancy she broke down her and Roy’s job duties. Roy handles the bigger jobs on the boring side of
the company. He meets with customers and estimates jobs. Nancy does a little bit of everything. She gets the crew(s) started and makes sure they have the right materials and equipment to do the job. She also quotes jobs, meets with customers, white lines/pre-marks job sites, and even has been a flagger to flag
