What happens when I update a locate request?
An update gives each utility a chance to refresh their markings and gives you a new expiration date. Because the utilities get the chance to refresh their markings, an update ticket has a 72-hour wait time like a normal locate request. You can avoid downtime by calling in the update three (3) working days before the original ticket expires.
Which utilities will be notified?
Tennessee 811 will notify member utilities who have underground lines in the area where you are working. These utility companies give us mapping data so that we know what areas they do or do not have lines in. The specific list of utilities is available on each locate request, so be sure to ask our agent to read the utilities to you when you call in or read through the list yourself if you enter a ticket online.
What if a utility is missing from the list?
If we don’t include a utility company that you think should be included, let us know. It could mean that the utility needs to update their database.
There are also utility companies who are not members of Tennessee 811. We can’t contact these nonmember utilities for you, so if you want to contact them, you will need to call them directly.
If a utility company chooses not to be a member of Tennessee 811, they waive the right to recover damages as long as the excavator calls 811 and does what they’re supposed to do.
Who finds and marks the underground lines?
Tennessee 811 does not mark utilities. The utility company or their contractor will locate and mark the public utilities that fall within your area of excavation as defined on the ticket. Utilities do not mark private lines, like a water service from the meter to the house or a fuel line that feeds natural gas to a grill.
What kind of markings can I expect?
The utilities mark their lines with paint and/or flags following a standardized color code.
