How will I know that all utilities have responded to my locate request?
One way to check is to match the markings at the jobsite to the utility list on the ticket. The color code above will help you know which is which.
You can also check the status of your locate request through Tennessee 811’s Positive Response System in the TN811 mobile app or online at www.tn811.com.
If you check the status of your ticket in the Positive Response System and all utilities have responded to say that their lines have been marked or are not in conflict, then you can begin your excavation work, even if that’s before the end of the three working days wait time for a normal locate request.
What if there’s evidence of an unmarked line?
If you observe clear evidence of an unmarked utility, like a cable TV pedestal or fiber optic handhole with no markings nearby, call 811 to enter a second notice. The second notice allows us to make the utility aware of a possible error. Once you call in the second notice, you can begin your excavation work as long as you use reasonable care to avoid damage to the underground lines.
How close can I get to the markings?
Our state law allows for a tolerance zone equal to the width of the line plus 24 inches on each side. At a minimum, you should stay 2 feet away from
each side of the marking. If the
marking indicates how wide the buried line is, then your 2-foot tolerance zone should be added on top of that width.
What if I need to dig inside the tolerance zone?
Use reasonable care to prevent
damage to the utility line. This could mean switching to hand-digging or using another soft- digging method like hydro-excavation.
How deep are the lines?
Utility companies are not required to tell you the depth of their buried lines. There are several factors that can result in the depth of the line changing after it is initially installed. If you need to know the exact depth of the line, you should pothole to expose the line and make sure to protect it while it’s exposed.
What if I hit a line?
If flammable, toxic, or corrosive gas or liquid is escaping from a damaged line, leave the area and contact 911. After calling 911, or if the damage doesn’t involve that type of line, call 811 to submit a damage
